A Hidetoki Wakizashi (山城守秀辰)

ujwa209 - A Hidetoki Wakizashi / 山城守秀時 脇差

Yamashiro no Kami Hidetoki was a swordsmith of considerable ability who traced his roots to Mino province, where he trained within the Tokuin school before travelling to Owari to further refine his craft under the 3rd generation Masatsune. The first generation – whose work is presented here – was active during the Shôho era (1644-1648) and also worked temporarily in Edo, a testament to the demand his blades generated beyond his base in Settsu province (Osaka). Fujishiro ranks him Chû-jôsaku, and his proven cutting ability earned him the coveted Wazamono classification.

This robust wakizashi is a prime example of Shodai Hidetoki at his best. The jihada is a well-forged ko-itame with a clear and consistent nioguchi, and the hamon delivers the hallmark of the smith’s finest work: a vivid gunome midare interspersed with striking kobushigata choji – fist-shaped clusters of clove blossom buds that rise dramatically from the temper line. The blade also shows sunagashi and gunome with togari points, a detail that reflects Hidetoki’s Mino lineage. The nakago is ubu with a single mekugi-ana, retaining its original length of 15.5cm.

Housed in a quality shirasaya with a handsome brass Kiku Shomon Niju-habaki decorated with finely worked chrysanthemum marks, this wakizashi is an excellent collector’s piece and would also make a prime candidate for a custom koshirae commission. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certified.
