A Shodai Hirotaka Katana (伯耆守藤原汎隆)

Hoki no Kami Hirotaka is one of the standout smiths of early Edo-period Echizen, a province that produced a remarkable concentration of talented blades during the Shintô era. Ranked chujo-saku by Fujishiro and certified wazamono by Yamada Asaemon – the official sword-testing authority of the Edo shogunate – Hirotaka occupies a well-earned place among the cutting masters of his generation. A blade that passes both tests is not merely decorative; it is a functioning weapon of the highest order.

This katana is a fine example of Hirotaka’s mature work. The jihada is a tight ko-itame, forged with discipline and clarity. The hamon is the heart of this sword: a bold gunome midare that moves energetically along the blade, punctuated by long ashi reaching toward the cutting edge and sunagashi running through the temper. It is active, confident, and unmistakably the work of a smith who understood both the aesthetic and the mechanical demands of the form. The nakago is ubu – fully original – and carries the full signature: Houki no Kami Fujiwara Hirotaka, Echizen Ju.

The Edo-period koshirae that accompanies this blade is a study in restrained quality. The tsuba is a large, handsome iron piece in the tomoe design – the swirling comma-form long associated with Shintô cosmology – attributed to Sadanaga of the Kii School, mid-Edo period (1700s), and certified with NTHK-NPO Kanteisho. The fuchi-kashira are plain polished iron, honest and purposeful. The tsuka is wrapped in black ito over same, with floral menuki. Everything about this mounting says warrior, not display.
