A Taikei Naotane Tanto (大慶直胤)

ujta033 - A Taikei Naotane Tanto / 大慶直胤 短刀

A genuine tanto by Taikei Naotane is a rarity that serious collectors spend careers pursuing. He made relatively few of them, and when one surfaces with this level of activity in the steel, it commands immediate attention. This example, dated to the second month of Tenpô 5 (1834) – considered the most prolific phase of Naotane’s working life – carries his personal seal of authenticity, the kao, alongside his craft name Taikei (大慶, meaning “great jubilation”).

What defines this blade is Naotane’s signature uzumaki-hada – large swirling itame wood-grain patterns that coil into hypnotic whirlpool formations across the surface of the steel. Threading through them is an extraordinary density of chikei, the gleaming black lines of nie crystals embedded in the ji that are the hallmark of Naotane at his finest. The hamon is a flowing ko-notare in nie-deki, enriched with kinsuji and sunagashi – the full vocabulary of Sôshû-tradition excellence rendered in miniature form.

The habakiis original to the blade and exceptional in its own right: gold-wrapped, with the Fujiwara Sagari-mon (the wisteria-blossom family crest of the Fujiwara clan) engraved on one face, and Naotane’s personal uzumaki whirlpool mark on the reverse – a classy, considered touch that permanently pairs the collar with this blade and identifies its former owner as a person of considerable standing. The sword is held in shirasaya and certified NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon.
