A Kanenaka Wakizashi (武蔵守兼中)

Looks can certainly be deceiving – this compact wakizashi carries genuine battle history. The kirikomi notch on the mune (spine) of the blade is a mark of real combat: it was made when a warrior blocked the sword of an opponent, leaving an indentation that no amount of polishing will ever erase. It is exactly the kind of detail that separates a fighting sword from a decorator’s piece.

The blade has been attributed to Wazamono swordsmith Musashi no Kami Kanenaka of Echizen province, a well-regarded smith who worked in this growing castle town during the late 1600s. Fujishiro ranks him Chujo-saku and notes his Wazamono cutting ability – and this blade’s hamon bears that out. The gunome kurikaishi temper line is alive with activity: kinsuji (bright lines of nie crystals) and sunagashi (drifting sweeps of fine nie) twist through it with real authority.

The sword sits in Edo-period koshirae of considerable charm. The menuki are golden dragons, the tsuba and fuchi-kashira share a refined arabesque design, and the black lacquered scabbard is reinforced with an iron kojiri at the tip. A kozuka (utility knife) depicting birds in flight completes the set. This is a fighting sword with a story, dressed for polite society.
