A Yoshioka-Ichimonji Katana (吉岡一文字)

The Ichimonji school stands among the most celebrated lineages in Japanese sword history, founded during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and active well into the turbulent Nambokuchô jidai (1333-1392). The school takes its name from the practice of inscribing the nakago with the horizontal character ichi – meaning “number one” – sometimes followed by the smith’s personal name. Within the broad Ichimonji umbrella sit several distinct branches: Ko-Ichimonji, the flamboyant Fukuoka Ichimonji group, Iwato Ichimonji, Katayama Ichimonji, and this blade’s attributed school, Yoshioka Ichimonji. The founder of the Yoshioka branch was Sukeyoshi, said to be the grandson of Sukemune, and the school’s smiths worked in the village of Yoshioka in Bizen province.
Given the modest curvature and fairly long chû-kissaki, this katana dates comfortably to the early to mid-1300s, during the Nambokuchô period. The blade was once a long tachi and has been shortened twice – evidenced by two mekugi-ana – leaving it with a greatly shortened ô-suriage nakago. The patina at the lower nakago is dark and beautifully aged, possibly original to the time of forging. The ichimonji-kaeri bôshi, with its distinctive horizontal line on the turn-back, mirrors the ichi kanji that defines the school – a satisfying signature in steel.
In hand, the blade rewards careful study. It opens with a restrained suguha-chôji at the base before blossoming about halfway up into an expansive ô-chôji-midare in fine nioi-deki. The jihada is a rich mokume-hada in all sizes, characteristic of the Yoshioka Ichimonji school, set against vivid midare-utsuri and dramatic mune-yaki that makes the spine appear to be on fire. The sword recently achieved NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon and has not been submitted for jûyô certification – presenting a clear opportunity for the serious collector. It is presented in shirasaya only, making it a natural candidate for a custom koshirae commission.
