A Kobayashi Kuniteru Katana (小林伊勢守国輝)

Shodai (first generation) Kobayashi Ise no Kami Kuniteru stands as one of the finest swordsmiths of early Edo-period Osaka. Born Kobayashi Hayanoshin, he trained under Shodai Kunisuke of the celebrated Kunisuke School, becoming both a star student and, by marrying his teacher’s daughter, an adopted son-in-law. He received the title of *Ise Daijo* in 1671, then elevated it to *Ise no Kami* – Lord of Ise province – in the spring of 1672. In the years that followed, until the Tenna era (1684), he was widely regarded as the finest active swordsmith in Osaka after Tsuda Sukehiro and Inoue Shinkai.
This *ubu-nakago* (full-length, unaltered tang) katana is dated to the third year of Enpô, 8th month – August 1675 – placing it squarely in the heart of Kuniteru’s most celebrated period. The blade exemplifies everything that made his reputation: a long, superbly forged *jigane* with dense *itame* steel and areas of *masame* running along the *shinogi*, laced throughout with *sunagashi* and *kinsuji*. The *dai-gunome midare* hamon surges with the energy of large, irregular waves and long *ashi* reaching out to the cutting edge – a treatment unmistakably reminiscent of his school’s grandmaster, Sukehiro. The *yakidashi* opens in a gentle *notare* before blossoming into the full pattern, in the classic Osaka style.
The sword carries two certificates of the highest order: NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon and NTHK-NPO Yushusaku, the latter being that organisation’s highest honour. It has been published in the NTHK-NPO’s *Book of Yushuto* swords, a copy of which accompanies the blade. Fujishiro ranks Kuniteru at *Jo-saku* (superior maker), and the sharpness rating of *Wazamono* confirms the practical excellence that underpins the artistic brilliance. Housed in a *shirasaya*, this is a blade for a serious collector.
