A Zenjo School Katana (善定派)

The Zenjo school operated in Mino province – present-day Gifu prefecture – during the Muromachi period, producing blades in the distinctive Mino tradition characterised by controlled, elegant geometry. This unsigned katana, attributed to that school and dated to circa 1500, carries the hallmarks of a mature Mino blade: a tightly forged *itame* jihada that flows with quiet discipline, and a *hoso-suguha* hamon of exceptional refinement. That very thin, straight temper line is deceptively demanding to execute well, and here it is done with the assurance of an experienced hand.
The blade has been shortened (*o-suriage*) at some point in its long history – a common practice for practical or aesthetic reasons – and has been recently polished, bringing the steel back to its full clarity. It comes mounted in a period Edo *koshirae*, a fitting companion that speaks to centuries of careful ownership. NBTHK Hozon certification confirms the blade’s authenticity and quality, with the sword having been examined and passed by the Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword.
For the collector drawn to the quiet authority of Mino work, this is a compelling piece: a blade that doesn’t announce itself loudly, but rewards sustained attention. The *hoso-suguha* tradition demands a certain patience from both maker and viewer, and this katana delivers it in full.
