A Gassan Sadakatsu Katana (月山貞勝)

Gassan Sadakatsu (1869-1943) was born the first son of the Meiji era’s master swordsmith Gassan Sadakazu, in Yariyamachi, Osaka, where he trained under his father from early childhood. After succeeding the headship of the Osaka Gassan school in 1918, Sadakatsu forged swords for the Emperor, the Imperial Army, the Imperial Navy, and the Imperial Family – including Emperor Hirohito’s Grand Field Marshal Sword and his enthronement tachi. Ranked among the finest smiths of the modern era, he became the undisputed master of the school’s signature ayasugi-hada, a wavy grain pattern unique to the Gassan family that has defined the tradition for centuries.
This katana was made on a lucky day in December 1933 – the 8th year of Showa – in commemoration of the birth of Crown Prince Akihito (later Emperor Akihito). Swords crafted to mark such an imperial occasion were almost always tanto; a full-length katana of this context is exceptionally rare, with only a handful known to have been made. Sadakatsu was 64 years old when this blade was forged, at the very height of his powers. His signature, cut with characteristic precision across numerous chisel strokes, reflects the majime quality – serious, diligent, perfectionist – that defines his character and his work.
The blade carries an exquisite ayasugi-hada with chikei and sunagashi, and a clear, bright chu-suguha hamon with plentiful kinsuji and ko-ashi. The jigane exhibits a beautiful bluish hue, consistent with the finest grade of tamahagane from the Gassan family’s historic inventory. Gassan Sadatoshi, grandson of Sadakatsu and current head of the Gassan family, authenticated this katana in sayagaki as shoshin yusaku nari (正真優作也) – an authentic and masterful work of art – inscribed in March 1998.
