A Shimada Gisuke Wakizashi (義助作)

Swordsmith Gisuke was a skilled smith of Suruga province working alongside Sukemune, Hirosuke, and Yoshitsuna during the mid to late Muromachi period. He is of the Shimada School, a tradition that formed a close alliance with the Soshu approach to sword making – and the influence of that heritage is evident throughout this commanding wakizashi. The sword is signed and in original condition (ubu nakago), a point of considerable importance.

The blade exhibits a vivid combination of wavy gunome hamon with brilliant spots of tobiyaki and full-temper hitatsura – fire-bright areas of hardening that spread beyond the conventional hamon line to encompass much of the blade surface. In the Soshu tradition, hitatsura is a mark of the highest technical ambition, and here it is executed with confidence and drama.

Of treasured importance is the Toppei Koshirae – a rare set of late Edo-period mounts based on designs of military sabres introduced from the West, distinguished by their long jiri over the scabbard tip. The tsuka is wrapped in baleen (whale beard), a highly prized binding found only on the most exceptional koshirae. Circular Dharmacakra – Buddhist Wheels of Life – appear on the hilt and kozuka, while the lotus-flower tsuba reminds us that beauty is fleeting. NTHK-NPO Kanteisho certification accompanies the sword.
