A Terushige Katana (武州下原住照重)

Some katana announce their history without a word – this fifth generation Terushige does exactly that. It bears two significant kirikomi, cuts driven into the spine of the blade by an opposing sword in actual combat. These are not merely battle scars; they are proof that this sword was taken into the field and put to the ultimate test. The balance is extraordinary, and there is an undeniable presence to holding it.
Swordsmith Bushu ju Shitahara Terushige of the fifth generation worked in Musashi province during the early Edo period’s Kanbun era. The Shitahara School produced robust, practical blades suited to the demands of Samurai life, and this example carries all that tradition. The length has been shortened slightly via ha-machiokuri – an adjustment made along the cutting edge only, leaving the nakago signature entirely intact. This practice reflected a warrior adapting his weapon to his own requirements, a mark of respect for both smith and blade.
NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certification confirms the authenticity of the signature and the sword’s physical and artistic significance. Comes complete with shirasaya, silk carry bag, sword stand, maintenance kit, DVD, printed care guide, and all registration and exportation paperwork.
