A Naomichi Katana (丹後守藤原直道)

ujka097 - A Naomichi Katana / 直道 刀

Tango no Kami Kanemichi was one of the finest smiths of the Mishina School and the third son of first generation Kyo-Tanba (Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi). Born in 1602 and dying in 1672, he received his title in 1625 and relocated to Osaka to establish what became known as the Osaka Tanba branch of the family. This katana was forged during the period when Kanemichi still signed under his earlier name, Naomichi – swords from this phase of his career carry a particular rarity and collectability.

Kanemichi earned the rare distinction of being granted permission to sign swords with the 16-petal kikumon chrysanthemum, the symbol of the Imperial court. The Mishina School is celebrated for its sudare-ba hamon, a temper line that evokes the appearance of a bamboo curtain – refined, rhythmic, and unmistakable. This example carries a gorgeous wavy notare hamon with ashi, lively and in excellent health.

The sword is accompanied by a rare Fujishiro Kanteisho certificate issued by the late Living National Treasure sword polisher Matsuo Fujishiro, who ranked Kanemichi as Jo-saku – a superior swordsmith. The Asaemon sharpness rating of Ryo-Wazamono further attests to the cutting prowess for which the Osaka Tanba lineage was renowned.
