A Naminohira Kiyosuke Katana (波平清佐作)

The Naminohira school stands as one of the oldest continuous sword-making traditions in Japan, tracing its origins to 987 AD when the first smiths arrived from Yamato – present-day Nara – and established themselves in Satsuma province at the southern tip of Kyushu. Remarkably, successive generations worked without interruption through to the close of the Edo period in 1868. The region’s abundance of sand iron, drawn from its rivers and beaches, gave Satsuma steel its distinctive character, and that character is unmistakable in this blade.
Signed Naminohira Kiyosuke Saku and dated to the Tenna era (circa 1681), this katana displays the hallmarks of the school in full measure. The jihada is forged in itame and carries the dark, undulating lines known as Satsuma gane – a trait unique to swords from this province. Along the hamon, thick inazuma formations create what are aptly called imozuru, or potato runners. The nakago is finished with the school’s characteristic higaki criss-cross file marks, applied before the signature was engraved. The boshi is a striking kaen – flame-shaped – animated by sweeping hakikake activity in the nie crystals.
The gunome choji midare hamon, a lively temper line of clove-blossom buds cascading along the steel, gives this sword immediate visual energy. Two certificates of authenticity accompany the blade: a vintage NBTHK Kicho Token issued in Showa 45 (1970), and an NTHK-NPO Kanteisho from Heisei 26 (2014). Housed in a plain shirasaya with a copper muji-habaki, this is a sword ready for a koshirae commission – its wave-and-water heritage makes it a natural candidate for a themed set of fittings.
