A Rai Kunizane Katana (来国真)

ujka272 - A Rai Kunizane Katana / 来国真 刀

This katana has been attributed to Rai Kunizane, a Jûyô-level smith from the celebrated Rai School of Yamashiro province – modern-day Kyoto. The character Rai (来) means “to come”, a reference to the school’s founder, who is said to have travelled to Japan from overseas. There are almost certainly two generations of Rai Kunizane: the first, born 1268 and son of master Rai Kunitoshi, worked through the early 1300s and died in 1318; the second lived from around 1350. The grandiose torii-zori curvature of this blade – deep, evenly distributed, centred at the middle – speaks unmistakably of the Kamakura period and points to the hand of the first generation.

The blade carries every hallmark the Rai School is prized for. The jihada is a tight ko-mokume hada alive with swirling chikei, bright ji-nie, and runs of yubashiri – the distinctive clustering of nie crystals that resembles running water. The characteristic Rai-hada is visible in the subtle tonal shifts where the shingane core is revealed through polishing. The hamon is a bright ko-gunome temper line, pulsing narrowly and enriched with flashing kinsuji, small ko-ashi, and spots of yo (detached nie leaves). The boshi runs to yakitsume in a midare fashion, with the characteristic nie-kuzure clustering noted by Tanobe-sensei in his sayagaki.

The nakago is o-suriage – greatly shortened in a later era, with one of the original mekugi-ana filled in, suggesting the former tachi was remounted more than once across its long life. The shirasaya carries a detailed sayagaki by Tanobe Michihiro, former director of the NBTHK, who praises the blade’s classic Rai school character and attributes it with confidence. A custom koshirae commission would be a natural next step for this exceptional piece.
