A Kasuga Daimyojin Kabuto (春日大明神)

ujar007 - A Kasuga Daimyojin Kabuto / 春日大明神 兜

This magnificent 40-plate kabuto follows the form of helmets from the Nambokucho period (1333-1392), with leather-covered fukigaeshi that curl elegantly to either side. It is signed by engraving with the characters 春日大明神 – a testament to its provenance as a piece kept at Kasuga Daimyojin, the great Kasuga Grand Shrine in Nara, first established in 768 AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The association with one of Japan’s most prestigious Shinto shrines gives this helmet a spiritual weight that goes well beyond its already considerable age.

The maker, Fujiwara Masamichi, has signed his name in a black circular formation known as Maruta Magozaemon, set against the red-lacquered interior – a colour traditionally associated with good fortune. The bowl is shaped similarly to the Zenshozan style. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a signed, provenanced helmet with documented shrine provenance, complete with a period helmet stand.
