A Ko-Kinkô SeaShells Menuki (古金工)

A superb pair of menuki from the Muromachi period, worked in shakudo with gold accents and attributed to Ko-Kinkô – the broad designation for skilled metalworkers active before the consolidation of the great Edo-period schools. The subject is a collection of seashells: scallops, turbans, and smaller varieties arranged with the natural ease that marks a confident hand. The gold highlights catch the light beautifully against the dark patinated shakudo ground.
Ko-Kinkô work of this quality is increasingly difficult to find. Pre-Edo metalwork tends to be less formulaic than later school production – these pieces show a directness and vitality in the carving that later became more refined and, at times, more mannered. The shell subject itself carries associations with the sea, the seasons, and classical poetry, making this an auspicious and culturally resonant choice.
Awarded NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon, confirming the attribution and period. Housed in a fitted wooden storage box. An excellent example for collectors focused on early tosogu.
