A Hôshô School Katana (保昌)

Of the five great schools of the Yamato tradition – Senjuin, Tegai, Taima, Hôshô, and Shikkake – the Hoshô School occupies a singular position. It is the only school not named after a temple or location, but most likely after a family name. It is also the only school to forge exclusively in masame-hada, the pure straight-grain jihada that defines the tradition at its most austere and demanding. Masame is difficult: the long weld seams invite splitting, and most Hoshô swords carry some hada-ware as an accepted characteristic. On this katana, the pure masame is essentially flawless – a rare and extraordinary achievement.
The NBTHK Juyo Token certificate describes this blade as an extraordinary work that surpasses even other great swords from the Hoshô School, and the sayagaki on the shirasaya takes the attribution a step further to Hoshô Sadayoshi, one of the school’s founders and a National Treasured swordsmith. The hamon is a refined hoso-suguha with ko-ashi and sunagashi, deeply nioi and sharp – precise and controlled work of the highest order.
The koshirae is a masterclass to match the blade. The saya is a rare late Edo-period tate kizami saya – black lacquered with symmetrically grooved vertical lines that pay direct tribute to the masame-hada of the blade itself. The tsuba is an early Edo-period Goto School piece of shakudo, rimmed in gold and carved with waves and gold kiri-mon. The fuchi-kashira features the moon. Both the koshirae and tsuba hold NTHK-NPO Kanteisho certificates. This is a complete package of the rarest order.
